Free network scanner for Windows

Advanced IP Scanner shows what is connected to your local network

Advanced IP Scanner is a free Windows utility from Famatech. Give it an address range and it lists the devices that respond, with names, MAC addresses and manufacturers, then lets you open shared folders, start RDP or Radmin sessions, and wake or shut down computers from the same list.

What is Advanced IP Scanner?

Advanced IP Scanner is a network scanner for Windows. It checks a range of addresses on your local network, lists every device that answers, and turns that list into a starting point for everyday admin tasks.

It is used by IT staff who need a quick inventory of an office network, and by home users trying to find the address of a printer, a camera or an unfamiliar device on their Wi-Fi. It does not inspect traffic, read files or test for vulnerabilities. Its job is to tell you what is connected and give you shortcuts to reach it.

The program is freeware developed by Famatech, the company behind the Radmin remote control software, which is why Radmin connections are built in.

  1. Address range

You enter a range or let the program use the subnet of the PC it runs on.

  2. Discovery

Each address in the range is checked to see whether a device responds.

  3. Identification

Responding devices are listed with name, IP, manufacturer and MAC address where available.

  4. Actions

From the list you open shares, start a remote session, wake or shut down a machine, or export results.

Features of Advanced IP Scanner

Six capabilities cover nearly everything people use the program for: finding devices, identifying them, and reaching them without leaving the results list.

Discovery

Scan an address range in one pass

Point the scanner at a range, a whole subnet or several ranges, and it checks each address for a response. Results fill in while the scan runs, so you can often stop as soon as you spot the device you were after.

  • Status
  • Name
  • IP
  • Manufacturer
  • MAC address

Identification

MAC address and manufacturer

For each device the scanner shows the hardware address and the adapter's vendor, which makes it much easier to tell a printer from a television.

Access

Shared folders and web pages

Shared folders open straight in File Explorer, and devices with HTTP, HTTPS or FTP services open in the matching program.

Records

Export to CSV

Save the results list as a CSV file for documentation, or keep one as a baseline to compare against later scans.

Remote control

RDP and Radmin from the results list

When a computer accepts Remote Desktop or has Radmin Server installed, you can connect from its row instead of copying addresses into another program.

Remote actions use features already on the target computer, so they depend on that machine's settings and your rights on it. The remote access guide lists what each one needs.

Power

Wake-on-LAN and remote shutdown

Wake a computer that supports Wake-on-LAN, or send a shutdown request to a Windows PC where you have administrative rights.

Portable

Run without installing

The setup file offers a Run option alongside Install, so you can use the scanner on a PC without a full installation.

How Advanced IP Scanner works

Four stages, from setup file to useful results. On a typical home network the whole process takes a few minutes the first time and seconds after that.

  1. Download and start

Get the Windows setup file, check its signature and start it. Choose Install for regular use or Run to use it without installing.

  2. Set the range

Let the program fill in your current subnet, or type a range such as 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.254 for the network you manage.

  3. Scan

Press Scan. Devices appear as they respond, each with its name, IP address, manufacturer and MAC address where available.

  4. Act on the results

Expand a device to open shared folders or web pages, connect through RDP or Radmin, wake or shut down a PC, or export the list.

Compatibility

Advanced IP Scanner runs on Windows only. What it can find is much broader: any device on the network that responds, whatever system that device runs.

Status reflects the platforms the developer publishes the program for.
Platform or use Status Notes
Windows desktop PCs Supported Runs as a standard Windows program. Check the developer's page for the exact Windows versions each build supports.
Portable use Via setup No separate portable package; the setup file's Run option starts the program without installing it.
Devices it can discover Any OS PCs, Macs, Linux machines, phones, printers, routers and storage devices appear if they respond on the network.
macOS Not offered No Mac edition. Angry IP Scanner is a common cross-platform alternative.
Linux Not offered No Linux edition from the developer.
Android and APK files Not offered No official app or APK. What to do from a phone.
iPhone and iPad Not offered No iOS edition.
Online, in a browser Not possible Local scanning has to run on the network itself. Why there is no web version.

Troubleshooting

Most problems come from the network or the target device rather than the scanner. Read each row as symptom, what to check, then the fix.

The scan finds almost nothing

CheckDoes the range match the IPv4 address and subnet mask from ipconfig?

FixScan the range your PC is actually on, or let the program fill in the current subnet.

A known Windows PC is missing

CheckIs that PC's network set to Public, or is its firewall silencing requests?

FixOn machines you manage, mark the trusted network as Private and follow your firewall policy.

Phones come and go between scans

CheckWas the phone asleep or roaming between access points?

FixWake the device, open an app on it, and scan again.

Manufacturer is blank for a phone

CheckIs the phone using a private Wi-Fi address?

FixThis is expected. Identify it by name, or compare with your router's device list.

No RDP option for a computer

CheckIs Remote Desktop enabled, and does the Windows edition allow incoming sessions?

FixEnable Remote Desktop on a Pro or Enterprise edition, then rescan.

Remote shutdown is refused

CheckDo you have administrative rights on the target computer?

FixUse an admin account on that machine and confirm local policy allows remote shutdown.

Windows warns about the setup file

CheckWhich publisher does the warning or the Digital Signatures tab show?

FixContinue only if the signer is Famatech; otherwise delete it and download again.

More causes, including guest Wi-Fi isolation, VLANs and VPNs, are covered in the missing devices checklist.

Use cases

Typical jobs people bring Advanced IP Scanner to, from a single missing printer to a routine office check.

Finding a printer or camera's address

Scan, look for the manufacturer you expect, and use that IP in the device's setup page or your PC's printer settings.

Checking for unfamiliar devices on home Wi-Fi

Compare names and manufacturers with the devices you own, then use your router's settings to deal with anything you do not recognise.

A quick office inventory

Scan the office ranges you manage and export the list to CSV, giving you a dated snapshot of what was connected.

Reaching a PC without hunting for its IP

Find the computer by name and start Remote Desktop or Radmin directly from its row.

Waking a desktop before remote work

Send a Wake-on-LAN request to a configured desktop on the same network, then connect once it has started.

Technician site visits

Use the Run option on a customer's PC, with their permission, to see the network without installing anything permanently.

Installation and setup

Setup takes a minute. The only real decision is whether to install the program or simply run it.

Every step is explained in more detail in the Windows download and setup guide.

  1. Download the setup file

Use the main button in the download section above. The file is a Windows .exe.

  2. Check the signature

Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures. The signer should be Famatech.

  3. Start setup and choose a language

Double-click the file. If Windows asks for permission, confirm only after checking the publisher shown.

  4. Choose Install or Run

Install adds the program and an uninstall entry. Run starts the scanner without a full installation.

Run is handy on PCs you do not own; see the portable use guide.

  5. Accept the licence and start scanning

After the licence agreement, the main window opens with the address field ready for your first range.

Pros and cons

A balanced view, so you can decide whether it suits your network before you download.

Strengths

  • Free to useDistributed as freeware, with no paid tier needed for scanning.
